SAM (Squamish Axe Man) was originally created by local artist Nick Tattersfield for the movie “Are We There Yet”, which was partly filmed in Britannia Beach during 2004. In 2006, SAM was donated to the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Association and a contest was held to “Name the Squamish Lumberjack”. The Squamish Axe Man – SAM for short – was given his name by long time Squamish resident Ernest Weiss.
SAM first found a home at the Squamish Adventure Centre where he was a favourite of both visitors and residents, who constantly stopped to have their picture taken with the iconic lumberjack. In 2010, SAM got to welcome the world to Squamish during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Century Signs was even able to outfit him with his very own pair of red mitts for the occasion!
During the summer of 2010 SAM moved south to his new home at Chances Squamish. Following an exciting summer at his new home, SAM needed a break from the action and so he spends the winter months relaxing in a warmer, sunnier undisclosed location. Expect to see SAM return to his summer home at Chances Squamish June or July each year.
